It's incredibly easy to hold your parents to extremely unrealistic standards. There might be something your mom said 10 years ago that seemed unbelievably cruel at the time, but looking back, it's something that you would never think twice about if you said it. That's not to say you need to forgive and forget every bad thing your parents have ever done, but it's essential to look at the past from the perspective of a mature adult rather than that of a slighted child to get the full picture. Otherwise, you're going to be holding onto resentments that are not worth the attention you're giving them.

There's a big difference between an upsetting passing comment made by your parents during your childhood and constant, persistent mistreatment for years that never seems to cease. A lot of the kids on the receiving end of these parenting texts are in that situation.
